I really enjoyed reading Don’s book. The more I read it the more I got sucked into it. Most of his material brought me back to my own childhood growing up as a young boy in the village. How the boy and girl interacted between them, spot on! I loved the Shaman Stories. I got the thrill and goose bumps. Which also brought me back to traveling to the villages for basketball games and night time scary stories. Great read, great story telling, great Yupik culture facts, great all around book!Product details

The Raven Gift 9781921922862 Books Reviews
I got this book purely for the setting (I live in the area in question), and was hooked right away-- the fact that the author lived here really shows, giving the book the real "real Alaska" feel I find most Alaskan-set stories lack. The plot was engaging and interesting, and just suspenseful enough to make putting it down impossible.
Great book
Terrific thriller+; characters, plot and prose on a par with any literary fiction. Nice sense of Eskimo life and culture (I know some of their legends) and impeccably crafted. You will not be able to put it down. Eagerly awaiting his next book! P.S. Ignore the politically correct "factual" afterword which detracts from the book. The author has a gift for fiction and I hope he will pursue it.
A wonderful story revealing much more then is written. Its about life and living. Listen and hear with eyes blind to only what is thought and not to what is known.
Living in Alaska and being familiar with the Yup'Ik culture, this book felt authentic to me. At first, and throughout much of the book, I was a little befuddled by the way chapters appeared mixed up, making me imagine a scenario where the author might have written the chapters and then cut them up to throw them in the air and scatter them on the floor, picking them up randomly. However, now that I've finished the book, I admire the unusual and imaginative way the author treated his subject.
I love this book so much, that I have bought at least 10 of them to give to others! It is unlike any other that I've read. The story has so many different and interesting aspects to it, and Don Rearden deftly brings them all together at the end. If you like Native American themes, conspiracy theory, romance, suspense, apocaloptic-like stories, and/or relevant issues facing the people of rural Alaska, then THIS is the novel for you.
Warning Several of the people I gave this book to were forced to read it and put everything else on the back burner, namely sleep and work around the house;)
I was so caught up in this novel that I found myself pondering many of its events and ideas for months afterwards.
You are sure to enjoy this book.
This book was recommended to me since I live in the same rural area it was written about and are also teachers. Some interesting cultural tidbits was revealed in the story that were helpful. The plot was thoughtfully written to provide the reader to experience a Century old event that changed their culture forever in respect to perspective on their children. I enjoyed reading this book and have recommended it to many others. It truly sheds a little brighter light on the Yup'ik culture's perception of the white man.
